Rethinking the PGA Tour Season

Earlier this month, the new PGA Tour Commissioner, Jay Monahan, discussed his plans for changing when the Tour play to remove some of its network competition. As mentioned in the Wall Street Journal, instead of 4 tournaments over a month's time, ending in late September, Monahan wants to get rid of 1 event and finish the playoff on Labor Day weekend.

His reasoning?

Let's not have the PGA Tour compete with the monstrosity that is the NFL. To accommodate that, Monahan wants to play the Players Championship in March and the PGA Championship in May, among other changes.

In addition, Monahan is discussing opting out of some of the Tour's network contracts to support the Golf Channel more heavily and develop partial ownership of the network.
